Google Docs How To Tutorial 2012 [Video]

Google Docs 2011

As requested by many of my readers I have finally produced a Google Docs “How To” Tutorial for 2012!

Some of you may have watched my Google Docs Beginner Tutorial 2011 which was very popular. Since the creation of that tutorial however, Google has made a number of GUI changes to Google Documents and I wanted to cover those updates for you!

The tutorial is a great overview and introduction to Google Docs.

I have just started using google docs. I have downloaded a spreadsheet that I want to work on with a group. It has a .xlsm tag (not sure if that means anything). Each time I try to open it, I get a message that reads "No Preview Available". I can choose download, but then MS excel opens. What gives?

  2. Anson Alexander says:

    Keith,

Try downloading the document and then uploading it back into Google docs – making sure that the "convert" checkbox is selected. The "Upload" button is just to the right of the "Create" button. Hope it helps!

    Dear Alex,

I can't tell you how helpful your tutorials are. You are a natural teacher and I hope someone besides the users of your website is benefiting from us. I run a not for profit that just started using Google docs and Gmail and I will be presenting this tutorial to the Directors next week and eventually to all staff (100+). That is how helpful I feel it is. Thanks.

      Tata,

I'm glad to hear the tutorial was so helpful for you! I'm planning on recording a general overall of Gmail this week so I'll provide a link to that once I'm finished. Is there any other area of Google Apps that you think could use some documentation in the form of tutorials?

      Thanks for reading and watching!

    Hi,
I am trying to upload an excel spreadsheet that has macros enabled and I keep getting the “No preview available” message, even after the option of convert was on. I have uploaded other excel files with no macros and I had no issues….will I be able to share file with macros enabled?
    Thanks,
    Lina

    1. Anson Alexander says:

      Lina,

I haven't heard officially whether Google Docs supports uploading macros or not but I have hear other people mention that they've had problems uploading excel files containing macros. I wish I had a better answer for you. Let me know how things work out and thanks for reading!

    Anson,
Thanks for your tutorials, they are really helpful! Do you really just do this on the side??

So here is my question for you… I am trying to organize documents that have been shared with me, but it looks like some of them are in folders as well? When I try to drag all of them to folders I've created, I get a message that says "other users will no longer see these items in 8 shared folders" …no idea what that means..?

    1. Anson Alexander says:

      Tegan,

When you drag a document to a folder in Google Docs, you are attempting to move it from its current location to a new location – just like if you were to drag a file on your computer's desktop to a folder. That message is letting you know that in the current location, that document is located in 8 shared folders and, by moving it, the document will be moved out of those shared folders and no longer shared with the people that previously had access unless individually specified on the particular document. I hope that helps!
