As some of you may have noticed, Google has made some major changes to the Google Docs service in 2011. Although most of the changes were cosmetic in nature, there were also some procedural changes. I have put the following video together as a tutorial outlining the details of the changes.

However I have been dismayed by the changes recently to Google Docs, the lack of documentation in General, and the inconsistency between the different parts of the Google Apps system.
Thought you may want to increase the pressure on Google by making an article out of these 2 forum pages (for the First one go to mid page 2

I’d say this would be additionally useful if you delved into some of the less intuitive issues. Such as how to select multiple files, how to make bulk changes, how to hide/unhide something, how to export files, how to move Collections around, or even a note about the implications of choosing not to show a Collection in the doc list–things that are real, significant, and sometimes difficult-to-understand changes from the older version. Things that it might take someone some time to figure out on their own.
The (negative) interface changes also stretch beyond what you mentioned–the removal of “Refresh,” the inability to see a list of modified dates at a glance, or that you can no longer see a document’s owner without clicking on the document.
The changes were pretty pervasive–I wish they could all be addressed in three minutes, but there’s really far too many of them.
John,
Thanks for the links… I will definitely look into both of them.
Elle- You’re right there are definitely a lot of changes and a three minute video doesn’t do it justice.
There is a possibility that I may release a more detailed tutorial but the idea of this one was a quick overview of the main changes.
There are a lot of non-power users of Google Docs and I was hoping to alleviate some of their initial worries by showing them that it is possible to do the same things they were able to do before.
I apologize if it was not quite what you were looking for.
Thank you very much for the feedback though and I will let you know if I release a more advanced Google Docs tutorial!
Hey Anson,
I came across this via the Google Docs forum — thanks for sharing this tutorial and helping other users learn about the new UI. We’d love to hear your feedback, too!

Theresa,
Thanks for your feedback, I will try to stay active in the Google forums? Are there any specific areas that Google is looking for more documentation on?
Hi,
I am an older student trying to practice using web2.0.
The web tools available for public use and classroom is overwhelming. I found your tutorial excellent. You have a good voice and that makes the tutorial understandable and inviting. I would like to listen and to view the beginner tutorial you mentioned. Thank you…nan
Nan,
I should be finishing up the more basic version of my Google Docs tutorial this week. Thanks for the feedback! I will send you can email when I finish and post the tutorial!
Good luck on the web!
Nan,
I have posted the Google Docs 2011 Beginner Tutorial Video. Hope it helps with what you’re looking for!
I am sharing a document with "Anyone with this link" option, but they are being asked to sign in. Everyone also has edit permissions. I don't want to make people sign in to read/edit the doc.
I have searched the web for an answer or explanation, but found none, so am asking you.
Annmo,
Open the document that you would like anyone to edit. Click "Share" in the top right corner of the document. Click "change" and change the global the permissions to "Public on the web". Click the checkbox at the bottom that says "Allow anyone to edit (no sign-in required)". It should also work if you choose the option "Anyone with the link" but when I did my test, the user was prompted to sign in if those permissions were chosen. Remember to copy and paste the document link and send it to the people that you want to be able to edit and view the document.
Let me know if you still have problems!
Thank you so much. Anson!
Using the "Public on the web" option, you do not have to sign in.
Thanks you for testing! and for allowing our quilting collaboration to go forward with ease!
I think Google would be smart if they removed the statement"No sign in required." next to "Anyone with this link" sharing option.
