Yahoo Email Accounts Being Hacked in 2013

Yahoo Email Account Hacked 2013

Many Yahoo email accounts are being hacked so far in 2013.

It was reported by The Next Web on January, 7 2013, that a number of Yahoo accounts had been hacked due to an XSS and Javascript exploit.

According to Yahoo, the account vulnerabilities were fixed on January, 8 2013.

According to hundreds, and maybe even thousands, of Yahoo users, Yahoo accounts are still being hacked as of March 4, 2013 and there is no sign of it stopping.

I actually had a client’s personal Yahoo account hacked on February 26, 2013 and numerous emails were sent from the client’s account containing a link for the client’s contacts to click on.

This event was virtually the exact same issue that other Yahoo account users have been reporting since early January, 2013.

At first, I thought this must be a phishing attack and somebody must have gained access to the account as a result of the user entering his or her login credentials on a phishing site.

After reading the article on TNW, I have realized that this is not a phishing attack but, instead, a Yahoo vulnerability.

The account of my client that was hacked had been accessed from Brazil on the day of the hack but Yahoo users have reported being hacked from countries around world including, but not limited to:

  1. Brazil
  2. Ireland
  3. UK
  4. Columbia
  5. Romania

To check to see if your Yahoo account has been hacked, please follow my instructions in the video tutorial below.

In the video below, I also give my personal recommendations on what a Yahoo user should do if they believe their account has been hacked.

Wife's Yahoo account was hacked from Argentina. I have emailed the ISP (as the IP address was in the header of the email).

FYI: My Yahoo email account was hacked this morning (april 10, 2013 11:44 am EST) from Poland and less than two minutes later from three separate locations in Indonesia.

Thank you for sharing this information.

  2. peter says:

Changing your password makes no difference. The hack is on yahoo's side, not the users'. Switch providers.

Someone hacked my account from Morocco on 7th March, thanks for telling me how to check where I recently logged in from which proved I had been hacked.

  4. Anson Alexander says:

No problem Zac, sorry it happened but glad this helped a bit!

    Dear Alex

I was hacked on March 5th & March 11th both from TURKEY via Yahoo Mobile.

Thanks for your short but informative video I came and I followed the steps that you showed.

Anyway, I have been hacked into in two separate yahoo accounts and the place that it indicates that its coming from is TURKEY. I would also like to point out that this was via yahoo mobile. I accessed my email account briefly during the day on my mobile phone something I never usually do and something I shall never be doing again, thanks to all the hassle it has caused me.

I have a yahoo but I never use it. I tried to login recently but it would not let me due to 'suspicious activity' undertaken in my account.
All of my friends with yahoo have had their accounts hacked – and it's the 11th of march.

I was hacked last night 3/15/2013 from Lithuania. I changed my password right away however an e-mail was in my inbox this morning from my own e-mail address stateing " Your account has ben hacked…lol. How have you been doing Dorine? PJ" I do not know anyone named PJ???? I did change all my passwords but this is very scary. Yahoo needs to really make some changes to keep it popularity.

  10. Jason says:

I was hacked today (19 Mar 2013). Hackers sent out email to all of my contacts saying I was in Manila and that I was being held and needed money. I watched the video and Yahoo no longer has the option under Sign-in and Security to see where they have been logging in. I changed all my passwords, created a sign-in seal, and a secruity key as well. Lets hope that works.

    1. Lyndsey says:

I was hacked 4/2/13 from UAE.

  11. Aimee says:

My account was just hacked on March 21. The individual lives in Georgia. Sent emails to anyone I have ever emailed since 2002-2003! I am so outraged that Yahoo! Seems to be doing nothing. I since closed my account and will not get a Yahoo! ID until the problem is addressed!

  15. C says:

Hacked this morning at 5:30am from India.

  16. Peter says:

It is time to change providers, yahoo is broken secure your contact lists by removing them and clearing out any other emails you have in your accounts.

Yahoo has no interest in saying the truth in this matter, the company will collapse if the truth is known. The technology has let them down. Let them go.

This has happen to most of my family's yahoo accounts. They don't take them over, they don't change their passwords they just go in and shotgun the contact list in the hopes people will click on the link.

  17. Cled Vincent says:

My account was hacked on 5th April from Yahoo!Mobile – WA USA – while I was on holiday!
It must have been from Yahoo's side as emails were sent from my account to people I was last in contact with 6 years ago, and have not been in my contacts list since then.
    Bye bye Yahoo!!!!!

  23. Amy Sheldon says:

My account was hacked in the early hours of this morning from Thailand (i'm in the uk). Thanks for the video advice on how to hopefully fix it :)

  24. Diana Manwaring says:

My Yahoo account was hacked about a week ago. I first noticed this when my Yahoo account (which is my alternate email addy) sent a message to my main email account. It was spam with a link to something I never heard of.

I then tried to get into my Yahoo account but could not. Remember, at no time did I click on any link.

Yahoo came up with security questions that I did not create, so I knew for sure at that point my account was hacked. Once I contacted Yahoo by phone and got back into my account, I found that someone from Thailand was responsible. I filed an internet crime complaint with the government and hope that whoever was responsible will be caught.

    1. Beth says:

How do you contact yahoo by phone? I can't find their number anywhere. I am locked out, everytime I try to submit a question for help on fixing this online, it says I haven't copied the letters correctly on captiva.

  25. Sarah says:

yup, happened to me today around 5:50 this morning. Was hacked from Bulgaria. No idea how they got access. I don't click on odd licks or give out my info. But I changed my password and checked my computer virus scan (came up clean)

  26. Garrett says:

I had my Yahoo account hacked on Sunday, June 16, 2013 and the location was Brazil. Earlier in the week, I had received 2 spam emails from a friend's Yahoo account. I spoke with a few other friends and 3 of them said they had their Yahoo accounts hacked in the last week. The location was listed as Ireland and the U.K. For whatever reason, it appears to be happening a lot in the past week. I contacted Yahoo, but haven't received any response from them.

  27. Pat says:

My account was hacked today from Isreal

  28. M. says:

I had separate email accounts hacked in Feb this year and on June 15th a week ago (accessed from "Lithuania"). The yahoo email hacking seems to be happening more often (to friends/colleagues) since the last year.

Password changes do not always prevent hacking — and long-unused mail accounts get targeted as well (ruling out viruses/malware on the computer or clicking malicious email links).

This is clearly a vulnerability issue within Yahoo operations and I can no longer trust their web mail service.

  29. Isabel says:

my yahoo email account was hacked today. And i have changed passwords several times today and to no avail. I feel as though my only option is to terminate the account. Very disappointed. I have followed all of the tips posted.

  30. Docas Bridget Japawu says:

Both my yahoo and email accounts were hacked on Tuesday 1st September 2013. I have tried to follow all the steps but to no help. I really need to have my accounts the moment I can't access my email and my face book accounts.. Please Yahoo Operators help.

  31. sharen says:

My website has been hacked as of 1-28-14, I am fine at home. Please send no money to anyone saying different. I cannot get into my emails until figured out, hang in there and be strong, stay focused.

  32. Diane says:

My email was hacked feb 17, 2014. I have rest the password and seem to have access back, but I have not received any emails and my inbox is empty.

  33. Roberto Blasini says:

    Hi Anson,

Hope you can help me with this one. My account has been hacked and completely taken over. I can't sign in to make any corrections. My password was changed and now everyone I know is getting spam from this address. Att/Yahoo put you through an infinite loop which asks me to log in to chat. I can't!!! Any ideas?
