YouTube used to tie your channel name to your whole Google account — change one and Gmail, Drive, and everything else changed with it. That’s not how it works anymore. Your channel name and your handle (the @name in your channel URL) are both YouTube-only settings now, completely separate from your Google Account name. Here’s how to change each one.
Channel name vs. handle — what’s the difference
These get confused constantly because they used to be the same thing and now they’re not:
- Channel name is your display name — what shows above your videos and next to your comments.
- Handle is your unique @identifier — it’s what your channel URL is built from (youtube.com/@yourhandle) and what people type to mention you in comments or Live Chat.
You can change your display name to basically anything. Your handle has to be unique across all of YouTube, which is the part that actually trips people up — someone else may already have the one you want.
How to change your channel name
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, go to Customization → Profile.
- Edit the name field.
- Click Publish.
Two things worth knowing before you do this: you can only change your channel name twice within a 14-day period, and changing it removes your verification badge if you had one. Neither of those is a huge deal, but the badge one catches people off guard.
How to change your handle
Same screen, different field:
- In YouTube Studio, go to Customization → Profile.
- Under Handle, enter the one you want.
- Click Publish.
If it’s taken, YouTube will tell you immediately — you don’t find out after publishing. Same 14-day rule applies here: two changes per 14 days. If you switch away from a handle, YouTube holds it for you for 14 days in case you change your mind and want it back.
On mobile
Tap your profile picture, tap View Channel, and you’ll find both the name and handle fields under your channel details — edit and save the same way.
What this doesn’t touch
Changing your channel name or handle is YouTube-only. Your Gmail, Drive, and Google Account name stay exactly as they are — you’d change those separately, from your Google Account settings, and it wouldn’t affect your channel either. If you’re managing a channel through a Brand Account, name changes work the same way through Studio.
