Incognito mode is one of the most misunderstood features in any browser. It is genuinely useful, but it protects you from a much narrower set of things than most people assume — and the gap between what it actually does and what people think it does is where the trouble starts.
Here is what it hides, what it does not, and when it is the right tool.
Open an Incognito window

You will know you are in it by the dark window and the hat-and-glasses icon. A useful habit: right-click any link and choose Open link in incognito window to send just that one page there.
Incognito windows are also separate from each other only by session, not by tab — every incognito tab you open shares the same private session, and it all ends when you close the last incognito window. Closing one tab is not enough.
What Incognito actually keeps private
Everything incognito does is local to your device. Within that scope it works exactly as advertised.
- Browsing history. Pages you visit are not written to your Chrome history.
- Cookies and site data. Held only for the session and discarded when you close the last Incognito window. Chrome also blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito, which can make some sign-ins or embedded features behave differently.
- Form and search entries. Not saved to autofill.
- Signed-in state. You start signed out of everything, which is why it is the quickest way to test a site as a logged-out visitor.
What Incognito cannot hide
The important limitation is that Incognito only controls what Chrome keeps on your device. It does not hide the connection itself.
- Your employer, school or network administrator. If you are on their network or their device, traffic can still be logged. Incognito does nothing about this.
- Your internet provider. Your ISP sees the sites you connect to regardless of browser mode.
- The websites you visit. They still see your IP address, and they can still fingerprint your browser.
- Anything you do after signing in. The moment you log into an account, that account records your activity normally. Signing into Google in incognito means your searches land in your Google account.
- Downloaded files. They stay on your computer. Only the download record is discarded.
- Bookmarks you create. They are saved permanently, like any other bookmark.
The short version: incognito hides your browsing from other people using your device. It does not make you anonymous on the internet.
Incognito disables extensions by default
Extensions are disabled in incognito by default, which is a deliberate privacy decision — an extension with permission to read page content would otherwise see your private session too.
If you need one, go to chrome://extensions, click Details on the extension, and turn on Allow in Incognito. Only do this for extensions you genuinely trust, because you are handing that developer access to precisely the browsing you chose to keep private.
This is also the reason a page can look different in incognito: with the ad blocker and script blockers switched off, you are seeing the site closer to how an ordinary visitor sees it.
Lock your Incognito tabs on a phone
On Android and iPhone, Chrome can require Face ID, a fingerprint or your device passcode before it will reveal open incognito tabs — which closes the obvious hole of someone picking up your unlocked phone.
Android: Settings → Privacy and security → Lock Incognito windows when you leave Chrome. iPhone/iPad: Settings → Privacy and security → Hide Incognito tabs → Lock immediately with device authentication.
Good reasons to use Incognito
- Signing into a second account without logging out of the first.
- Checking how a page looks to a logged-out visitor — especially useful when testing your own site, account flows, or public pages.
- Shopping or travel research on a shared computer, where you would rather not leave the history or have the recommendations follow you.
- Using someone else’s machine, where the real benefit is simply that closing the window cleans up after you.
- Troubleshooting a broken web page — incognito starts with no cookies and no extensions, which rules both out in one step.
When Incognito is not enough
If your goal is keeping destination traffic away from your local network or internet provider, a VPN can do that — but it shifts that trust to the VPN provider and still does not make you anonymous. If your goal is reducing cross-site tracking, use browser privacy controls or a tool built for that. Incognito does not change your IP address or your browser fingerprint.
Incognito is a local privacy tool. Judged as one, it does its job well.
